Total Points Leaderboards
Highlights from the leaderboards in our flagship stat, Total Points, which attempts to measure everything that happens on the field (full primer here):
* The Ravens ended the season as the No. 1 team in Total Points Per Play, on the strength of an offense that ranked first in the Passing, Rushing, and Receiving components of that stat. You can read more about that in our Stat of the Week.
* The Eagles are our No. 1 defensive team, with all three units- Run Defense, Pass Rush, and Pass Coverage- ranking 3rd overall. They finished just ahead of the Broncos, who ranked 7th, 6th, and 2nd in those stats, respectively.

* Joe Burrow finished as the overall leader in Total Points, just ahead of Lamar Jackson, though Jackson edged Burrow out on a per-play basis.

* Jahymr Gibbs finished as the leader in Total Points both overall and per-play among running backs. He ensured that with his fantastic game on Sunday Night Football in the regular season finale.

* Wide receiver was tight at the top as six players finished with either 37, 38, or 39 Total Points. The most impressive thing may be that Puka Nacua (38) was one of them. He easily led the field in production on a per-snap basis.

* Among offensive linemen, Dion Dawkins (Bills), Brian O’Neill (Vikings), and Tristan Wirfs (Buccaneers) were the top tackles, Kevin Zeitler (Lions) and Landon Dickerson (Eagles) were the leading guards, and Hjalte Froholdt (Cardinals) was the No. 1 center.

* The top two defensive tackles in Total Points were Jeffery Simmons (Titans) and Cameron Heyward (Steelers). The leading defensive ends were Jonathan Greenard (Vikings) and Myles Garrett (Browns). Three linebackers were within one point of each other: Zack Baun (Eagles), Brian Burns (Giants), and Kaden Elliss (Falcons). The top cornerbacks were Patrick Surtain (Broncos) and Marlon Humphrey (Ravens) who basically finished dead even in Total Points.

* The biggest gap between the leader and runner-up was at safety, where Kerby Joseph finished with 79 Total Points, 19 ahead of runner-up Julian Love.

The biggest differential on offense was at tight end, where George Kittle finished with 53 points. Trey McBride (41) was the only other tight end with at least 40 Total Points. Kittle also led all tight ends in Total Points in 2018, 2019, and 2023.

Charting Leaderboards

Leaderboards in various statistical categories based on video review by our staff, including long passes, yards after contact, and pressures.

* Prior to this season, Sam Darnold never had more than 14 completions on throws more than 20 yards downfield in a season. This season, he had 34 such completions, easily the most in the NFL in 2024 and the most in any season since Tom Brady had 35 in 2020. Darnold was also the only quarterback to complete more than half of his passes of that length among those with at least 10 attempts.

* Justin Jefferson had an NFL-best 15 receptions on those 20-plus yard throws. Jefferson snagged 15-of-24 such targets (63%). The only receiver with a better percentage was Darnell Mooney of the Falcons (14-of-22, 64%).

* Derrick Henry led the NFL with 1,096 rushing yards after contact, the second straight year he has led the league in that stat. Henry also has the most yards after contact in a season in the 10 seasons we’ve tracked that stat. He had 1,331 in a 16-game season in 2020. Henry also led the NFL with 66 broken and missed tackles in 2024.

* Trey Hendrickson’s 85 pressures easily led the NFL, as he finished with 13 more than the runner-up, Jared Verse. Hendrickson also paced the league with a 19% pressure percentage, a smidge better than Micah Parsons. Not surprisingly, Hendrickson’s 18 sacks were most in the league.

*In terms of pressures above expectation (pressures generated beyond an expectation determined by alignment and situation), the leaders were two Cowboys, Osa Odighizuwa and Micah Parsons. Hendrickson was third in that stat.

Matchups and Mismatches

When we look at matchups by unit and compare the teams playing a particular game, there are intriguing matchups and mismatches each week.

Find your own matchups and mismatches here. You can also find much of this information at the SIS DataHub Pro.

Here are some we noticed:

(All references to rankings are in the context of Total Points Per Play)

* The strength of the Chargers defense is its No. 1-ranked Pass Coverage and that doesn’t bode well for the Texans, who rank 24th in Passing and 19th in Receiving.

* The Steelers’ best chance against a Ravens team that ranks 1st in Passing, Rushing, and Receiving, is their No. 1-ranked Pass Rush. Lamar Jackson’s worst single-game completion percentage of the season (16-of-33, 49%) came in a loss to Pittsburgh earlier this season.

* Bills-Broncos has the potential to be a very good matchup. Each team ranks in the top 10 in five of the seven units we measure. The Broncos’ receivers rank 31st but they’re going up against a Bills coverage unit that is the team’s weakest link, as it ranks 20th.

* There’s a big time strength-on-strength aspect to the Packers-Eagles matchup. The Packers offense ranks top 10 in Passing, Rushing, Receiving, and Blocking. The Eagles defense ranks 3rd in Pass Rush, Pass Coverage, and Run Defense.

* The running games of the Commanders and Buccaneers should be fun to watch, as they rank 2nd and 3rd in the NFL in Rushing this season. The Buccaneers are better situated to take advantage of that. The Commanders ranked 27th in Run Defense and it also doesn’t bode well for Washington that it ranks 19th in Pass Coverage against a Bucs receiver group that ranks 4th.

* The Vikings have top 10 units in Passing and Receiving and the key for Jared Verse and the Rams will be to put enough pressure on to disrupt Sam Darnold. Minnesota ranks 22nd in both Blocking overall and Pass Blocking, so the opportunities to do that will be there.
